Joint Replacement Surgery
A joint replacement surgery is the surgical removal of a damaged or diseased joint and replacing it with artificial devices or prosthesis. It is usually made of metal, plastic or ceramic. This procedure is typically performed on joints such as the Hip, Knee, Shoulder, and sometimes Elbow or Ankle. Here are the details of how it works:
Evaluation and planning
- Dr. Biren Nadkarni will assess the patient’s condition. The condition is often caused by arthritis, injury, or wear and tear over time. That may have caused severe pain and loss of function.
- Preoperative imaging (such as an X-ray or MRI) helps in evaluating the condition and plan surgery accordingly.
- Before surgery, patients may ask to perform physical therapy to strengthen and condition their muscles.
Surgery:
- Damaged portion or complete joints are removed. This may include the end of bones (e.g., femur in hip replacement, tibia in knee replacement) and worn-out cartilage
- Dr. Biren Nadkarni will prepares the bone to fit into the prosthesis precisely.
- Artificial joints are implanted, which are designed to imitate natural joint movement.
- It is cemented into the joint or compressed so that the bone grows around it.
Orthopedic Surgeons in Delhi such as Dr. Biren Nadkarni uses Knee arthroscopy procedure to look into the issues of knee joint through small incisions, no large cuts. It is often used to diagnose and treat joint problems such as knees, shoulders, elbows, hips, or in some cases as part of a joint replacement or separate procedure to correct a joint problem.
This is how arthroscopy works:
- Small incision: A small incision (buttonhole sized) is made around the joint.
- Arthroscope insertion: A narrow tube with a camera (arthroscope) will be inserted through the incision. The camera sends a magnified image of the joint to the monitor to assist the surgeon to see the inside of joint in detail.
- Treatment: Special surgical instruments are inserted to make necessary repairs through other small incisions, such as smoothing rough cartilage, removing loose bone fragments or repair a damaged ligament.
Recovery: Arthroscopy generally has a shorter recovery time than traditional open surgery because it is less invasive. However, it is generally used for repair and diagnosis rather than total joint replacement.

I would highly recommend Dr Biren for knee replacement surgery. We did two surgeries with him, one for my mother and other for my mother in law and the whole process was very smooth. We consulted the Dr in his clinic and he explained us in detail about the whole process. We found him very reliable and trustworthy. The surgery took place in Sitaram Bhartiya hospital and the hospital was also great.. Every staff, nurse and Doctors there took extreme care of us. I can see my mother n mother in law walking better than earlier and with each day there is more improvement. We thank Dr Biren from bottom of our heart. Also special mention to Mr Sunny who was always available to answer our queries, helping us in every process. Thank you so much. 😊

Dr. Biren and his team have been extremely supportive through my ACL reconstruction & meniscus repair and the pre and post surgery supportive care has also been handled extremely well. Dr. Biren listens to problems very patiently and provides practical solutions. When he was handling my surgery, I knew I was in safe hands and this made me calm during and after the surgery. His team has been there to guide us always over a call and physically. Other than my surgery, he has been there to guide us during all our family’s orthopedic issues and we trust him completely. Thank you Dr. Biren! 😊
